Please see my previous reply reference the Sell family. Nothing now remains of the 1880 Cole Green Farm save a somewhat dilapidated wooden shed which still contains a large bread oven. The old farm buildings went in the 1960`s.On checking the 1880 map I see that there was another house , about where the present (1905) house stands. This is in addition to the one demolished in the 1960`s. The Sells might have lived in either of these or in Meesden Corner Cottage nearby where the last Sell in Brent Pelham lived.
As regards a smallholding this is entirely possible but our records are mostly in the County Records Office in Hertford. Have you tried There? They are said to be very helpful.
There used to be an area just up the road from Cole Green, say 10 acres known as " Village Potatoe Ground" and more recently "Old Allotments" now part of Home Field. Could this be part of the smallholding?

That all depends which Blackhall you mean! he present very attractive and ancient house known as Blackhall was until the 1960`s a pair of cottages, known as Blackhall cottages. It was then completely redone and only the oak _frame_ is original. If this had not been done it would have suffered the same fate as the original Blackhall known as Blackhall Farm. This was some 300yds down the bridleway from the present Blackhall. It was in a very bad state of repair by the early 1960`s although one could still, with some trepidation go upstairs. As such property was then worth very little it was decided to demolish the house and farm buildings. The Civil Defence were keen to carry out an exercise rescuing casualties after a nuclear explosion and their kind offer to blow the whole place up for nothing was accepted. The (non nuclear) explosion did a very tidy job. The area is now a wood. With current property prices this explosion is now a matter of some regret.
To complicate matters there used to be another pair of cottages at Blackhall Farm. These stood just past the farmhouse. They were burnt down about 1881. I trust that these were not inhabited by one of the Sell family at the time. They were not rebuilt.

Re:COLE GREEN FARM,COLE GREEN 2 Years, 7 Months ago
I came across an old note book the other day which gives the list of tithe lands in Brent and Furneux Pelham together with their owners and occupiers. A Mr. Sell is shown as the "Propieter" of some 12 acres in Brent Pelham. One of his fields is named Hawkins which still exists though somewhat changed. It is next to Blackhall so I suspect that Blackhall was his farm. However the occupier of the fields is John Lawrence, presumably Mr Sell`s tenant. There is also a George Sell mentioned as "propieter" of 5 acres but as his fields are called "The Ploughed Field" and "The Pastures" I can`t tell where they were. The map which goes with the note book is, of course , missing but may turn up. David Trigg appears to have been his tenant. George Sell is also down as occupier of a further 1 acre 35 perches.
The notebook is dated 1778? though the Furneux Pelham section has the definate date of 1784. I will try to find the map.
