HI Ted thanks for your reply, in the winter when it was in full flow us kids were scared to go near it.I will never forget Brent Pelham, it is a great little village. We will try to come and see you before the end of the summer. All the best regards Alf Taylor.

The ford is called Violets Lane. The River Ash runs down the road for the best part of 3/4 mile. According to a recent Guiness Book Of Records it is the longest ford in the UK.It is not currently flowing due to the dry spell but I still wouldn`t drive down it except in a Landrover as some of the puddles can be up to three feet deep. There appears to be a debate as to who should maintain it, the river board or the highway authority, and as a result nobody seems to do so. When it does flow it can do so with awesome power. A Lanrrover driver a couple of years back set out to demonstrate how a Landrover could go anywhere. He was wrong. The water washed the vehicle onto its roof and wrote it off. The driver and his wife survived. I dont know if the marriage did.
There was also an interesting case when a car travelling up stream collided with a boat travelling down stream. Both had steered to the correct side of the road/ river so a collision was inevitable.

My friend and myself got lost trying to find Meesdon Bury, we saw what was the Ford though at that time did not know it was the River Ash ??. until driving through 5 large puddles,my friends car stalled,He could not get his car started so left me with it while he went for help, after about 45 minutes he returned with a lady with a Range Rover who towed us out. The puddle in front of car when tested with walking stick was about 2 feet deep.We never saw a warning sign on way in,only on way out
