I am not certain about Chamberlaynes Farm as this is in Clavering parish. There is a Chamberlains Wood and Chamberlains Moat in Brent Pelham, about a mile from Chamberlaynes Farm. I do not know if there is any connection between the two but they are so close it seems a great coincidence if there is none. The origin of the name is lost in the mists of time. The moat is of some interest as it appears to be medieval and of large size but may be considerably older as it is adjacent to the Roman Road and Roman coins and pottery have been found there.

Thank you for that, Ted. Very useful. For medical purposes, I had to research my wife's family back in the eighties. We live in Welwyn Garden City but my wife was born in Gravesend and grew up near Bath. We had no connection with Hertfordshire ( we thought) until moving here ,but discovered that her family ( she was a Chamberlain) were hedgehogs for hundreds of years before moving to London at the end of the 19th century. We found ancestors at the villages around Royston and further down into Herts. I also found a reference to a medieval Chamberlayne's estate which extended into three counties - I must dig out the reference. Presumably, workers on the estate might have obtained their surnames from these times. I therefore collect references to Chamberlains/Chamberlaynes etc. in North Herts for research purposes to see potentail links.
Cheers
David
