Affordable Housing

Sally Smallwood from EHDC attended the January meeting and presented the results of the Furneux Pelham parish survey. In total 82 forms were returned, out of a total sent out of 220, a response rate of 38% . The survey showed that there was a small but significant need for affordable housing within the parish, with over a third of respondents identifying that the need was most acute for young people (39%), followed closely by families (31%). Additionally, 50 out of the 82 respondees also indicated that they thought a small development (between 3 and 10 dwellings) might be acceptable, and provided a number of possible site suggestions within their questionnaires.

The Parish Council will now meet to decide if they accept the findings of the study , and if so, what the next steps should be. In the event that that the PC decides to take the issue further, then one option could be that the EHDC would broker a meeting with a local housing association and the PC to look at potential design and location options. This process would happen concurrent with publicity within the village, in order to allow local residents to comment on any plans that may be proposed.

Planning Applications
There was a lot of debate concerning the application made by Greene king to develop an area of land opposite the Brewery Tap pub. This application has subsequently turned down by EHDC, but the issue highlighted the need for more active community involvement in the process of reviewing contentious planning applications at PC level. Parish members are urged to contact a parish council member in order to make their views known on any planning proposal that might affect them before the council considers such applications, so that these views can be considered as part of the PC evaluation process.
