Goldfinch
The Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis) , also known as the European Goldfinch is the most colourful finch with a bright red face and yellow wing patch.

They usually move around in sociable groups, often breeding in loose colonies.  You can usually hear their delightful liquid twittering song before seeing them. Goldfinches love thistles and teasels as their long fine beaks allow them to extract otherwise inaccessible seeds.

Increasingly they are visiting birdtables and feeders. In winter many UK goldfinches migrate as far south as Spain.
