The Wren (Troglodytes troglodytes) is the second smallest bird you will find in the Pelhams.

You will probably hear it first with the remarkably loud song (turn on your computer speakers) from such a tiny bird.  It is rufous brown, plump with a short stubby tail and a pale white stripe through the eye.

In Germany it is called a Zaunkönig which fittingly means Fence-King as you will see it choose a high perch along a fence to perform its song.

It is the commonest UK breeding bird, although it suffers declines during prolonged, severely cold winters.  So what's the smallest bird....? The Goldcrest.
