The Blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla) is a pale greyish warbler.

The male has a black cap, and the female a chestnut one. Its delightful fluting song (turn up your computer speakers) has earned it the name 'northern nightingale'.  It also makes a sound like clicking two pebbles together.

Although it is usually a summer visitor, birds from Germany and north-east Europe are increasingly spending the winter in the UK.

These two Blackcaps were photographed in April in the hedgerow in Furneux Pelham.
